Why is not recommended sleeping on the back during pregnancy?
In the first part of the pregnancy, more precisely in the first trimester, it is less important on which side you sleep. The problems with this position begin to appear when the belly begins to see and becomes sharpened towards the end of the 9 months.
As your abdomen grows in size towards the end of pregnancy, the additional weight you accumulate must be directed to the lower area of the body, ie the pelvic area.
When the tummy is constantly growing and sleeping on your back, the entire weight of the uterus will put pressure on the spine, intestines and the main blood vessels. The uterus especially presses the vein that carries blood from the heart to the fetus. When this happens too long, the fetus is deprived of nutrients and oxygen and is endangered.
The pressure exerted by the weight of the uterus when you sit back can lead to:

- breathing difficulties;
- impaired blood circulation in the baby.
Therefore, when you sit more back in pregnancy and get up you can feel dizziness and even fainting or you may have severe back pain. This position is even more dangerous if you have high blood pressure in pregnancy. In this case, it is contraindicated to sleep like this throughout the pregnancy. The risk of depriving your baby of vitamins, nutrients and oxygen is too high.
What is the best sleep position during pregnancy?
The specialists argue that the most suitable is to sleep on one side, more precisely on the left side starting with the second trimester of pregnancy. This position promotes increased blood flow from the placenta to the baby.
If you are accustomed to sleeping on your back in general, it is advisable to start exercising from the beginning of pregnancy. It will help you get used to the period when you will only have to sleep like this. You can try to make this position more comfortable with the help of pillows. These are very useful for pregnant women and help them sleep better when they suffer from insomnia.
You can start with a thin pillow that you place between your legs. In this way the knees will be easily removed and the hips aligned. Many women feel more comfortable when they put the pillow under their belly to support it. In addition, you may need a pillow and back to support it. If you have trouble falling asleep then you need to create healthy habits that favor a good sleep routine.
Try to do sports during the day (with the doctor's permission), but never near bedtime, because it gives you energy. Also, avoid caffeine drinks and sugary foods before bedtime. Read something or do a relaxing activity beforehand to make it easier to fall asleep.
