South Beach Diet

The South Beach diet is, in principle, a variant of the Atkins diet. It was developed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston, director of the Mount Sinai Cardiac Prevention Center in Miami Beach.
The South Beach diet, like the Atkins diet, limits carbohydrate intake (say goodbye to potatoes, fruits, breads, cereals, rice, pastas, beers, carrots and corn for the first two weeks), but encourages "good" carbohydrates.


The South Beach diet, like the Atkins diet, has a harder preliminary phase, followed by a long-term diet plan.
The differences between the two diets can be summarized as:
• Fats.

The South Beach Diet prohibits unhealthy fats, but recommends healthy fats.
• Carbohydrates. The South Beach diet does not count carbohydrate weight. The Atkins Diet is trying to change a person from a sugar drinker into a fat burning machine. The South Beach diet pays attention to how much sugar is in a carbohydrate. Carbohydrates with low sugar content (low glycemic index, which does not cause the blood sugar to rise and fall sharply) are considered good.
As Agatston says, this means that the diet is not necessarily a low-carb or high-fat diet.

What you can eat

In this diet you will not be hungry because it promotes "strategic snacks".
You don't have to count calories and there are no fixed portions. But I do not recommend excesses. The idea is to eat normal portions (to satisfy your hunger).
In the first 14-day phase, in addition to the carbohydrate-rich foods listed above, you must avoid confectionery or other desserts rich in sugar and alcohol altogether.
You are allowed two servings of low-fat milk or yogurt per day.
The next phase partially reintroduces carbohydrates, through very limited portions of pasta, carrots, tomatoes and onions in unlimited quantities, fruits in moderate quantities. This phase lasts until you reach the ideal weight.
The last phase is the one you should follow all your life. You can eat normal foods in normal portions, but following some basic rules.

How it works

The first two weeks are meant to reduce the craving for foods high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can be misleading because they are digested too quickly, raising the level of insulin resulting in the sensation of hunger shortly after meals.
By breaking this vicious circle, the South Beach diet promises to make you want to eat less and healthier.

What the experts say

Experts say that the diet meets some important aspects of a healthy diet by incorporating vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins and does not omit any important group of foods.
But you have to expect that most of the pounds lost in the first phase are due to fluids. Losing such a large amount of water can cause problems so it is best to consult a dietitian first, who can help you customize your diet to meet your nutritional needs.
This diet may be the solution you are looking for if you manage to bend it on your own personality and lifestyle.
