Ear infections, treated with viral proteins

Ear infections could be treated with a viral protein, say US researchers quoted by BBC News. This is lysine, an amino acid essential for antibody formation, which can kill the bacteria responsible for the appearance of otitis media. This infection especially affects young people and manifests through pain and discomfort. "Lysine could be a good alternative to antibiotics, which in time lead to the appearance of resistance of the body to these drugs," the doctors report. This amino acid, the researchers say, could prevent recurrences as well.

The tests have been performed so far in mice, and their efficiency was 90%. "It's an important step, but we are far from saying whether the benefits will be significant," said David Bowdler, consultant surgeon and ENT physician at Lewisham University Hospital (UK).
