High levels of vitamin D during pregnancy appear to reduce the risk of wheezing or asthma in early childhood, according to two studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

One of the studies in a Boston lab looked at the impact of vitamin D on children up to the age of 5. Compared with the group of women with the lowest levels of vitamin D, in the case of children whose mothers had higher levels, the risk of wheezing was reduced by 52 percent.
