Olive oil is good for the heart and, of its various varieties, virgin olive oil has been most effective in the fight against cardiovascular disease, according to a study presented at the World Cardiology Congress in Barcelona, AFP reports.
This study was conducted within the project entitled "Eurolive" by the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM) in Barcelona and was coordinated by Dr. Maria Isabel Covas.
He demonstrates that regular consumption of virgin olive oil reduces cardiovascular risks thanks to the antioxidant qualities of plant substances called "polyphenols" and not only due to monounsaturated fats.
The beneficial effects for heart of virgin olive oil and the regime called "Mediterranean" were already known, but it is for the first time that a scientific study confirms its superiority over other types of oils, according to the study authors.
More than 25,000 specialists attended the World Cardiology Congress in Barcelona until Wednesday.
