Hemangiomas

Question:

- My little girl at the age of one year appeared with 3 months ago a hemangioma on the left cheek about 1.5 cm from the corner of the mouth. It grew to about 2 mm in diameter. What would be the possibilities to solve the problem?

Answer:

Hemangiomas are tumor formations of blood vessels that do not have a normal histological structure (they are an agglomeration, a swarm of blood vessels that have grown abnormally). Depending on the surface and depth, there are several types of hemangiomas:

Hemangiomas are tumor formations of blood vessels that do not have a normal histological structure (they are an agglomeration, a swarm of blood vessels that have grown abnormally). Depending on the surface and depth, there are several types of hemangiomas:

  • flat hemangioma found in the epidermis and dermis; appears as a purple stain, disappears under pressure
  • tumor hemangioma - of variable size, protruding to the outside, extending into depth; it does not change at digital pressure; blood vessels are like vascular buds, feeding from the peripheral vessels
  • cavernous hemangioma - smaller tumor on the outside but well represented in the hypodermis; blood vessels appear as caverns that communicate with each other (like a cut bath sponge; it is fed by 1.2 large vessels.
  • cirrhotic hemangioma - the vessels appear as sinuous, communicating cords, meet in an aneurysm; on palpation, pulsations are perceived.
  • Hemangiomas can be encountered throughout the body surface and in some cases may represent a surgical emergency, having great power of extension, ulceration, infection, bleeding; if the tumor hemangioma is damaged - the bleeding stops very hard.
Also, in rare cases, a visible hemangioma may be accompanied by an internal hemangioma, even intracranial.
The treatment differs depending on the type of hemangioma: the plan may benefit from local treatment, the other types responding well to surgical treatment only. The treatment must be preceded by performing some analyzes and investigations: the usual analyzes, ultrasound, tomography (to detect any associated hemangiomas), phlebography, arteriography to discover the sources of food.
By surgery, the tissue is completely removed to prevent recurrences. For the hemangiomas of the delicate areas (eyelids, tip of the nose, groin region) is treated with laser initially and then surgery is performed.
