Diversification: vegetables and fruits in the baby's menu

Diversification is an important moment in a child's life. Through this he begins to discover the tastes and foods he will meet with throughout his life, and the body begins to take the vitamins and minerals needed from these foods.

Preserved fruits and vegetables are not recommended because most of their vitamins and nutrients are lost in the juice they are in. Many of us throw this juice along with it and nutrients. Preservatives and added sugar are two other reasons why canned fruits and vegetables are not suitable for babies. Where do you put that the term of validity is quite high and you can find yourself in the situation of giving the baby to eat a product that was manufactured before the baby was born.

When is it good to start diversification with vegetables and fruits?

There is no rule regarding the order in which fruits or vegetables should be introduced to the baby's diet, but some specialists recommend starting with fruit diversification, because they are sweet, as are breast milk. Other specialists say that precisely because of the inherent preference for sweets it is good to start with vegetables, which are easier to tolerate if this order is kept. If you start with vegetables, the most suitable for the first months of diversification are sweet potatoes, pumpkins, carrots or celery. Do not forget that at first it will be quite difficult for the baby to accept a new dish, so you will have to insist.

It is good for the diversification to start around 6 months of life. Around the age of 6 months, the child's digestive system should be fully developed, the risk of eating disorders being much lower.

Most pediatricians recommend that at least 8 months, vegetables and fruits be cooked and then given to the baby. Thus, after they have softened during boiling, they will be easier to digest by the baby's still underdeveloped stomach. Bananas and avocado fruits are the exception to this recommendation. This does not mean that your baby will have problems if you give her fruits or vegetables neglected, only that the digestion will be a little difficult, being able to give her some tummy ache.

How do we prepare the first tables of vegetables and fruits of the baby?

The first tables made of vegetables and fruits are good to be as soft as possible (for this you can use soup in which they have been boiled or milk), following which, during the course, make them stronger and more consistent.

The food should be passed well because the baby cannot chew it. For this, use a kitchen robot that can help you quickly obtain a homogeneous puree. With the help of the robot you can also determine the consistency of the vegetable or fruit puree, so you can gradually increase it as the baby develops. Blender is the best solution for crushing fruit and vegetables for mash, but if it doesn't exist in your home, you can pass them on with a fork.

Even if the products have been frozen, you must cook them before giving them to the baby. Until they reach the bags and the freezer, all the fruits and vegetables didn't even go through the pan to be cooked. Whether you choose to cook them, boil them or leave them in a steam bath you will be able to make the fruits and vegetables softer and keep them nutrients.

Avoid using sugar or salt, at least up to the age of 1, choose a little lemon juice.

The portions should not be too large: the baby's small stomach accepts shorter and thicker meals, than the very rich ones and at large intervals.

Do not keep the mash in the refrigerator for more than 48 hours. This way, you will keep the taste of the fruits and nutrients they offer. The best option is to make small quantities of puree, sufficient for a single day. It is right that you have to cook daily, but at least your baby is eating healthy.

Another recommended idea is to always peel the raw fruits you give to the little one and this because it will quickly get bored to snack on them, and peeling them will give them faster access to the taste of the fruit.

Pay attention to the baby's reactions after introducing each new food into the diversification process. You can tell from now on if your child is allergic to a particular product.

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits will provide your child with a higher intake of vitamin C, which plays a particularly important role in the absorption of iron from other foods. Important sources of vitamin C are: broccoli, strawberries, avocado fruits, citrus fruits, mango, onion, kiwi, tomatoes, cauliflower. Therefore, at least one of these foods should be included in each meal.
