Romanians grow without vitamins

Only half of the Romanians take vitamins preventively, in a world in which the stressful life rhythm and the chaotic diet lead to a poor assimilation of those elements necessary for a healthy body. While we are barely discovering them, the US and Europe are fighting economically for food supplements.

Only half of the Romanians take vitamins preventively, in a world in which the stressful life rhythm and the chaotic diet lead to a poor assimilation of those elements necessary for a healthy body. While we are barely discovering them, the US and Europe are fighting economically for food supplements.
The market for vitamins and minerals in Romania has barely reached, in 2004, half the potential, support the specialists in the pharmaceutical industry. With a potential of $ 50 million, the vitamin market barely jumped by $ 22 million in 2004, but is likely to double in 2005.
Vitamins and minerals, sold as such in pharmacies and which theoretically I have all heard, are part of a larger group of dietary supplements.

Food additives belong to the same category, as many producers rely on advertising campaigns, when, as a rule, they exaggerate the nutritional properties of a food: high calcium milk, vitamin margarine, etc.
Romanians do not consume food supplements because they do not have the education necessary to understand the role of prevention in the personal and even national economy. And poverty plays a role in this, proving the position of cheap products in the first place in the list of vitamins sold in Romanian pharmacies. "Healthy eating is the basis of preventive medicine. The US and the developed European states focus on prevention, because otherwise the medical costs are very high for both the patient and the state," explains professor Gheorghe Mencinicopschi, director of the Food Research Institute (ICA). .
Food supplements do not substitute food that needs to be balanced. Everyone needs food supplements in modern society: children (who need calcium, magnesium supplements), the elderly, those who make physical effort (for protein intake), stressed people and those living in polluting environments.
In essence, every person in this century needs nutritional supplements. Awareness of this need has led to the explosive development of the profile market in civilized states. "In the US and Europe we find whole shelves of supplements in the supermarket. At the moment, we are only in pharmacies and very few have entered stores. But worldwide there is a fierce fight between the American and European style, therefore, Europeans felt the need to take a series of measures to prevent the penetration of American products on their market. It is somehow a reissue of the war of genetically modified organisms, "explains Mencinicopschi.
Vitamin overdose damages health
"The American model assumes that everything that has not yet been proven to harm you can be eaten, while the European model believes that, until food safety is established, it must be restricted," adds Laura Pascu. , from the Consumer Protection Association. The Europeans adopted in 2002 a directive that limits the number of vitamins, minerals and nutrients admitted for sale in pharmacies or the food industry. The directive has also been ratified by Romania, although our market is not yet so developed and, even if it is, we would not have competent authorities to control it.
The European directive emphasizes the quantities in which dietary supplements can be administered, starting from the finding that people are tempted to exaggerate the role of vitamins when they discover them. For example, an overdose of vitamin A can cause liver disease, hair loss, bone damage. More than 50 mg daily of vitamin B 6 can cause peripheral sensory impairment. Over 2.5 grams / day of calcium supplements can induce hypercalcemia, kidney stones and even kidney disease.
Weight loss belts
Draconic weight loss strains are also associated with nutritional supplements sold as food which, if consumed, transforms you from overweight to fat-beautiful. Professor Mencinicopschi draws attention to the fact that nutritional supplements taken instead of food, whether sold by companies that claim to be internationally renowned, are extremely dangerous.
"During a weight loss, the body suffers from metabolic stress. Basically, it consumes itself, it destroys the muscles, the tissues, it produces hormonal changes. Maintaining in a healthy form really implies the weakening, but only after the advice of a specialist and not by starving, "says Mencinicopschi.
Milk, good for children only
Man is the only mammal that consumes milk after the "chicken" period. "In our mentality, the role of milk in adults is exaggerated. Research has shown that it can cause lactose intolerance if consumed in large quantities. To extract calcium and other vitamins contained in milk, adults are advised to consume fermented milk derivatives. , yogurt, cheese, "recommends Mencinicopschi.
He says it was discovered that milk and goat milk derivatives are the best, as the level of assimilation of vitamins in it. "This is why counterfeit products appeared on the market, presented as goat's milk and sold even more expensive," warns Mencinicopschi.
